The third book in the Harriet the Miniature Donkey Series, Harriet Saves the Day, is getting closer to publication. This week our new illustrator, Natalie Gilbert, completed the paintings for the book. The next step is for Friesen Press to begin the design phase.
When Harriet was young, she loved to back up to the water trough and, using her back legs, kick it over. She usually did this to let Mr. Michael know it needed filling! Harriet Saves the Day is a story about how Harriet uses her kicking talent to rescue two cats, Thomas and Patrick, from a hay fire on a stormy summer day.
Its been another long winter in the North Country of Upstate New York but everyone on the farm is doing well. Let me introduce them to you. In addition to the four miniature donkeys: Harriet, Sally, Nacho and Mushroom, there are 6 dogs (all rescues), two cats, and 13 goats (a combination of American Cashmere and Nubian breeds).
The dogs' names and breeds are: Katie (Coyote/German Shepherd), Abigail and Samantha (Akita), Henry and Jacob (St. Bernard/Lab) and Mattie (St. Bernard/pit bull).
The names of the cats are Zipper and Colette.
And finally the goats: Phyllis, Gracie, Georgette, Cocoa, Charlotte, Wendy, Gabby, Gretchen, Roman, Charlie, Midnight and Max!
In the coming months I look forward to sharing many stories about everyone on the farm. I will also post pictures of them on the Gallery page. Hope you are doing well and we'll talk more soon!
Hi! My name is Glenn Guiles, author of the Harriet the Miniature Donkey Series. The picture above is Harriet who is a real animal living in upstate New York with her friends Sally, Nacho and Mushroom. The Harriet books are based on things that actually happened to Harriet with a small amount of poetic license from the author. Book #1, A Hug for Harriet, is the story of Harriet's trip from a large herd of donkeys in Cranberry Lake, New York to a small herd (4 donkeys) at Mr. Michael's farm. She now lives in a place called Hopkinton which is inside the Adirondack State Park of New York State.
This blog is to tell you more about Harriet, her friends and where she lives. It is also to introduce the new books in the series. All of the books are written for children ages 3-8 and, as my editor said it so well, "to be read to and to be read by!"
In just a few months Book #2: Harriet's Big Adventure will be published by Friesen Press. This is the story about the day Harriet found that her owner, Mr. Michael, had not latched the gate to her pasture. This gave her the opportunity to go for a walk in the woods on Mr. Michael's farm. On her walk she sees new things and meets new friends!
There are three more books in the series that will be coming out in the future: Harriet Saves the Day, Harriet and Her Special Friends, and Harriet and Katie. I will be telling you more about each of these fun books in the near future.
Come back and visit often and find out what Harriet and all the other animals on Mr. Michael's farm are up to! Bye for now!
